Starting A Home Business
Starting a home-based business is an aspiration for many people. They desire the freedom of creating their own income, they desire to be their own boss. In truth, many people try to achieve this dream, some more successful than others. What do the most successful business owners have in common? They create a plan before ever taking the initial steps into creating a home business. When you develop a plan, you set the path to success. The following 3 steps are a culmination of what successful entrepreneurs do to start a successful home business.
- Self Awareness – You must step back and look at yourself in a completely honest fashion and ask yourself if you are willing to commit to this type of business. Are you willing to work from home, often spending long hours by yourself? Is your family supportive? Can you detach yourself from your household obligations and dedicate time to work? Are you easily distracted and in need of management? When you answer these questions honestly, you will know if a home based business is for you.
- Visualisation – As a successful home-based entrepreneur you must be able to visualise the business you wish to start and its success. Once you can close your eyes and see how you plan for everything to work, you will be ready for the next step. Why is this so important? Because entrepreneurs have the gift of manifesting their dreams. Once they can see the business as a success, it becomes one. If you are not totally committed to this business venture, literally “feeling” it, you will not be as likely to give what it takes to make it succeed.
- Create A 7 Step Business Plan – A business plan is the backbone for your business. You will need this plan to create your business, to track your progress, and to optimise your future opportunities. Many people that consider opening a home business believe that a business plan is only necessary when financing is sought. However, this is the furthest thing from the truth. A business plan makes your visualisation a reality, it makes your goals concrete. There is not a successful business out there that does not have a business plan that it uses as a guide to success.
Your 7 step plan should include:
- Name of your business – Your business name must reflect the type of product or service you provide. Make sure that it is catchy enough to give you good brand recognition. At this time you may also wish to consider domain names. An Internet presence is required for success, even if it is not an Internet based business.
- Mission Statement – Create a mission statement for your business that describes the goals of the company. If you are providing a service, describe what you will provide and to whom. If you are selling a product, describe your goals for that product.
- Business Summary – Different from your Mission Statement, your summary will include what type of business you desire to build. Are you going to be land based? Internet based? Both? Do you plan to stay local, expand throughout the country, or achieve a worldwide presence? This is where you commit your dream to paper.
- List Products or Services – At this point in your business plan you need to give a detailed account of what products or services you plan to market. Write out why this product or service can change the lives of other people and how you anticipate the service or product to be received. Write a statement about your competition and how your business will differ from what they offer.
- Assessments – This portion of your business plan is very crucial to your success. It is here that you look at the opportunity, and decide how you can make it happen. You will need to look at both positive and negative aspects of the business and what the solution to the problem is. During your assessment, include important aspects such as:
- Funding sources. Will you be funding the endeavour yourself to begin with, or are you seeking investors?
- Accounting. Are your bookkeeping skills strong, or will you need to seek outside assistance for tax reporting and billing?
- Insurance. Will you need insurance to operate a business from your home?
- Space. Do you have the adequate space to operate a business within your home. If not, what can be done to accommodate your business venture?
- Equipment. Do you have the proper equipment to manage a business from home? Are you connected to broadband? Do you have mobile service?
- Personal finances. Are you capable of surviving for a short period with little income coming from the business? Small businesses often are slow to generate a profit in the first few months.
- Marketing and Sales – You will need to determine who your target market is for your product, and how you intend to reach this market. This is the most time consuming part of your business plan, but very important. You will need to lay out your entire initial market strategy. For example, if you are intending to have a printed media campaign, write out what newspapers or magazines you will utilise for advertising space. If you are going on the Internet for your marketing, write a synopsis of how you are going to attract customers through the web.
You will find as you write out your marketing strategies that new ideas come to mind. Many times you simply do not see what avenues you may have missed until it is written out.
Your marketing strategy will change as your business develops. This is only your initial marketing strategy. As your business grows you will eliminate forms of advertisement that do not produce results, and expound on the ones that generate clients. You will also, with time, see what types of people are purchasing your product or service, and target your advertising specifically on them.
You will also need to develop your company image at this time. If you are not comfortable with logo creation, printing designs or website development, you will need to state in your plan who will take care of these issues. Company image is very important, it will help potential clients determine if you are a credible and trust-worthy company.
- Setting Goals The final part of your business plan must include goals for your future. Where do you intend the company to be at 3 months, 6 months and at 1 and 5 years. These 4 time increments should be written out and considered carefully. When you provide time-set goals for your company you can effectively track the progress. If you have not reached a goal at a specific period, look over your strategies and see what can be adjusted so you can meet your next goal.
Goals should be reset each year, regardless of having a 5 year plan. Products, services and economies change and the business owner should always be prepared to accommodate these facts. By continuing to review your goals in this manner, you will always be able to take your company to the next level of success.
Starting a business from home is not easy, but it is very rewarding. Home-based professionals understand the necessity to create a business plan and to set goals. They know that while they will have more time with their family and friends by working from a home based business, they must also be dedicated and professional if they wish to succeed.
